Justice League of America #152 (of 261)
2,000 Light-Years to Christmas!
March 31st, 1978
“2,000 LIGHT-YEARS TO CHRISTMAS!” A trio of aliens passing Earth lose three powerful artifacts, which create chaos for the Justice League, especially when Major Macabre, a South American strongman, attempts to gain power from them.
Three celestial travelers, bearing gifts, journey through the Milky Way. Colliding with an unseen space warp, the travelers fall to Earth, losing their gifts in the fall. The Justice League of America plays poker, aboard their satellite headquarters. The Red Tornado notes the fall of the celestial travelers. The Justice League of America writes them off as shooting stars. The first gift satchel, containing a flask, falls in a polluted river, in Georgia. Environmental activists confront Truman Ajax, demanding Ajax close his factories. Ajax refuses. The second gift satchel, containing a glowing orb, falls in a Middle Eastern war zone. The orb is found by a terrified little girl, named Traya.
The final gift satchel, containing loaves of bread, falls to Earth in British Columbia. A stag finds the bread, and begins to consume it. The stag is chased off by hunters. In Peru, the would-be dictator, Major Macabre, becomes aware of the celestial's gifts falling to Earth. Major Macabre murders his prime subordinate, Domingas, for failing to notify him sooner. Major Macabre jets off to collect the three celestial gifts. The Justice League of America are alerted to strange happenings, in the locations where the celestial gifts fell. The Justice League of America splits into three teams, of two, to mount an investigation. The Red Tornado, and Superman, journey to the Middle East.
The Red Tornado deflects a missile barrage aimed at the city. Superman witnesses two enormous energy-constructed hands crush the fighter jets. Superman rescues the pilots. The Red Tornado tracks the hands back to Traya. An energy-constructed hammer and anvil crush another fighter jet. The Red Tornado approaches Traya, only to be struck, hard, by an energy-constructed battering ram. The Batman, and the Elongated Man, arrive at Ajax Chemicals, in Georgia. The factory appears deserted. The Elongated Man is surrounded by the environmental activists, now transformed into horrific monsters. The Batman rescues the Elongated Man.
The Batman is struck down, by the monstrous activists, leaving the Elongated Man surrounded once again. The Hawkgirl, and the Hawkman, arrive in British Columbia. They find hunters, and law enforcers, fleeing the forest. An enormous centaur crashes through the trees. The Hawkman fires on the beast, to no effect. The centaur gores the Hawkman on it's antlers. The Hawkgirl nets the beast, then fires a tranquilizer bolt into it. The centaur rears up, and kicks the Hawkgirl into a tree. The tranquilizer takes effect, sedating the beast. Major Macabre arrives, and takes the loaves of bread away from the beast. Soldiers fire on Traya. The glowing orb shields Traya, then vaporizes the soldiers.
Superman approaches Traya, only to be caught in an energy-constructed vise. The Red Tornado pleads with Traya to cease her attack on Superman. The Red Tornado's compassionate approach works. Traya drops the glowing orb, and runs into the Red Tornado's embrace. Major Macabre arrives, grown to giant proportions, from consuming the loaves of bread. Major Macabre beats down Superman, then crushes the Red Tornado's arm. Major Macabre takes possession of the glowing orb. The Batman awakens, tied to a printing press. The monstrous activists still surround the Elongated Man.
Taking his cue from the Batman's coded words, the Elongated Man surreptitiously stretches a single finger towards the Batman. Intent on releasing the Batman, the Elongated Man accidentally turns on the printing press, drawing the Batman inside. The Elongated Man desperately fights his way past the horrific activists, to rescue the Batman. The Batman, however, is in no need of resucing. His own skills as the world's greatest escape artist have sufficed to keep him from harm. The Batman, and the Elongatred Man, track the factory's contamination to the flask, which has opened in the river. As they rush to retrieve it, they are struck down by Major Macabre.
The Justice League of America, with Traya, re-assemble aboard their satellite headquarters. The Red Tornado suggests finding the celestial gift-bearers before confronting Major Macabre. Before Major Macabre can drink from the flask, the Hawkgirl shoots it out of his hands. The Justice League of America battles Major Macabre. The Red Tornado draws Major Macabre to the celestial gift-bearers, who strike Major Macabre down. With the power drawn from Major Macabre, the celestial gift-bearers take possession of their gifts, and depart.
As they resume their journey, the Red Tornado likens the celestial gift-bearers to the three kings who bore gifts for the son of God. The Justice League of America is left to wonder if a new savior has been birthed into the universe.
